Playa Vista resident Peter Jerome Kahrilas died Tuesday, September 22nd. He was 87.
Born July 3rd, 1922 in New York City to Greek immigrants, Kahrilas graduated from Stuyvesant High School and the City College of New York, where he earned his degree in electrical engineering. He earned a master’s degree at Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and did graduate work at Columbia University and USC.
Kahrilas worked in the aerospace industry for Sperry Gyroscope, Hughes Aircraft and Raytheon Missile Systems Division in Lexington, Massachusetts, where he was instrumental in the development and testing of the Patriot missile guidance system, his family said.
Kahrilas and his wife Leticia moved to Playa Vista in 2004.
His book, “Electronic Scanning Radar Systems Design Handbook,” written in 1976, has been used worldwide by electronics engineers, according to his family.
Kahrilas is survived by his wife of 61 years, Leticia, daughter Kim, sons Peter and Nicholas, and seven grandchildren.
