The 33rd annual Marina del Rey Halibut Derby is scheduled to be held Saturday and Sunday, April 21st and 22nd. Last year, 835 anglers competed for more than $65,000 in cash and prizes.

This year, anglers can win prizes and raffle items, including fishing vacations to Van Wormer’s Hotel Punta Colorada, The Inn at Mazatlan, El Cid, Las Flores Resort, Las Rocas Resort & Spa, Sitka Point Lodge and the Vagabond as well as a shot at a brand-new Toyota Tundra Truck from Marina del Rey Toyota.

The derby dates have been moved one month later than formerly held to take advantage of the normally expected better weather and better fishing later in the spring.

The annual Halibut Fishing Seminar will feature halibut experts discussing aspects of halibut fishing such as natural and artificial baits, drifting, trolling and bounce ball techniques, the right gear and terminal tackle along with when and where to fish specific areas to maximize success.

Marina del Rey Halibut Derby organizers say that because “kayak angling is the fastest growing venue in fishing,” the 2007 Halibut Derby will showcase a separate kayak division this year.

There will be a separate jackpot for kayak anglers and trophies for the three biggest halibut landed by kayakers.

Kayakers will also be able to join the team competition and regular jackpot and be eligible for all of the high-valued regular prizes as well.

All proceeds from the Halibut Derby go to fund the Marina del Rey Anglers youth fishing program, the White Seabass Ocean Enhancement Program, and other charitable causes.

Mail-in registration forms will be available and mailed to past participants.

Marina del Rey Anglers members will host a Halibut Derby registration booth at the Fred Hall Show and the Halibut Fishing Seminar at Burton Chace Park, 13650 Mindanao Way, Marina del Rey, on Wednesday, April 11th.

Registration forms will also be published in Western Outdoor News and Pacific Coast Sportfishing magazine.

There will be a last-minute registration desk open at Burton Chace Park from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily from Monday, April 16th, through Friday, April 20th, the week preceding the derby.

Anglers can also contact derby co-chairs to request a mail-in registration form.
