The 34th Annual Marina del Rey Halibut Derby is scheduled to take place Saturday and Sunday, April 5th and 6th.

The Marina del Rey Halibut Derby is considered the largest fishing tournament on the West Coast and boasts one of the largest offerings of cash and non-cash prizes, according to Marina del Rey Anglers.

All proceeds go to fund the nonprofit Marina del Rey Anglers youth fishing program and the White Seabass Ocean Enhancement Program.

“We expect over 800 anglers to compete for over $65,000 in cash and prizes, and that this year’s event will be bigger, better and more fun than ever,” said Ken Raymond, president of Marina del Rey Anglers.

A number of raffle items and prizes will be given away at the event, including deluxe fishing vacations to the Van Wormer’s Punta Colorada Hotel and Resort in theÝEast Cape of Baja California, Sitka Point Lodge in Alaska, The Inn at Mazatl·n, and El Cid and Las Flores Resort in Mexico.

Other prizes include fishing trips on the new Intrepid and Vagabond, as well as a shot at a brand-new Toyota Tundra Truck from Marina del Rey Toyota.

The derby will also conduct a special “high bid” auction for a five-day fishing trip aboard the Intrepid Sportfishing boat. The auction is scheduled to begin at noon Monday, March 10th, and finish at noon Friday, March 14th.

Marina del Rey Anglers director Larry Brown will accept bids by e-mail at lmbrownxx@earth, or (310) 578-2288. The highest bidder will win a fishing trip valued at $2,035. The minimum bid is $1,800.

Event co-chair Stan Zisser said there will be many ways to compete and participants do not need to own a boat to compete. Sportfishing boats, including the Betty-O out of Marina del Rey Sportfishing, will dedicate the weekend to the derby.

Kayakers and float tubers will even have their own separate division with a separate jackpot and trophies, Zisser said.

“Nowadays there is no excuse for missing this fun and charitable event” said Zisser. “This year we will have another separate kayak division to recognize the fastest- growing sector of the fishing industry and to increase accessibility and participation to everybody who wants to compete.

“I want to personally challenge and encourage all kayakers to come out and join the fun and win some of the big prizes.”

Raymond added, “We are really increasing the excitement for anglers catching big halibut this year. The grand prize for the largest halibut will be an all-inclusive fishing trip for two at the beautiful Punta Colorada Hotel and Resort in the marlin capital of the world in the East Cape of Baja California.

“If the winning halibut is over 40 pounds, a bonus prize of a fishing trip for two to Sitka Point Lodge in Alaska will be awarded. The angler with the biggest halibut over 50 pounds will be driving the new Toyota truck.

There are various ways for participants to sign up. Registration forms will be mailed to past participants and they will also be available at the Halibut Derby registration booth at the Fred Hall Show and The Halibut Fishing Seminar at Burton Chace Park in Marina del Rey.

The fishing seminar will be conducted by halibut legend David Bacon at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 12th.
