The Playa del Run Aquathlon series is scheduled to kick off Sunday, May 21st, at Ocean Park in Santa Monica.
The event consists of a 1,000-meter swim and a 5k run, followed by a post-event fiesta.
All races begin at 8 a.m. at Barnard Way and Ocean Park Boulevard.
The cost is $35 for the Aquathlon (swim and run) and $20 for just the run portion.
Event organizers say the six-event Swim/Run Series attracts some of the top athletes in Southern California and approximately 2,000 athletes and spectators are expected to take part in the event series throughout the summer.
This year’s beneficiary is the Challenged Athletes Foundation, which raises money to help people with physical disabilities pursue an active lifestyle through physical fitness and competitive athletics.
Event director Luis Canales said the Playa del Run reminds him of “the summer festivals that were around in Marina del Rey and the Santa Monica area” while he was growing up.
