Playa del Rey resident Mira Tweti was awarded a national Genesis Award by the Humane Society of the United States.

Tweti won the “Outstanding Newspaper Magazine Feature” category for her Los Angeles Times Magazine exposé on the plight of parrots in the pet trade industry.

Her article, titled “Plenty to Squawk About,” was published in July last year.

She wrote in the article that wild parrots are often euthanized after captivity because they become unwanted pets.

The 18th Annual Genesis Awards were presented in a March ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.

The Animal Planet cable channel televised the ceremony last month.
