Karen Nelson, a longtime Playa del Rey resident and special education teacher, died Tuesday, September 2nd. She was 69.

A native Californian, Nelson taught special education classes for 35 years and lived in Playa del Rey for 36 years.

She was also an adventurer at heart who enjoyed travels around the world, downhill skiing, sailing, hiking and camping, her friends said. Nelson had a passion to protect the environment and loved her dogs Tank and Moxie.

Nelson is survived by her brothers John and Victor, her nephew Christopher, and many friends.

A private memorial service for Nelson is planned some time in the near future during which her ashes will be scattered at sea near the beach in front of her home, along with the ashes of her beloved companions Walt Luthlie and Tank.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in her name may be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
