Los Angeles Councilman Bill Rosendahl and Playa del Rey Toy Drive organizer Pam Stacey at the event in Playa del Rey’s Triangle Park, 2010.

The Ninth Annual Toy Drive and Animal Shelter Drive, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1 at Triangle Park, Waterview Street and Trask Avenue (near Pershing Drive) in Playa del Rey, will collect toys for the upcoming holidays for the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and accept items for local animal shelters to help animals in their care.
“We look forward to the possibility of Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl again joining us for what would mark his fifth year of attendance at the event,” said organizer and local resident Pam Stacey.
Community members are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys or books of any value in their original packaging to the park, and the items will be delivered to the Children’s Hospital. No stuffed animals will be accepted because children at the hospital may have allergies from compromised immune systems or allergies to fabrics.
This year, raffle tickets will be sold for $1 each to raise money for Children’s Hospital’s “Holidays from the Heart” program, and social workers at the hospital will distribute gift cards from the funds to the neediest families with a child in the hospital.
The items donated for raffle are all donated from local businesses as gift cards. The businesses include Caffe Pinguini, Tower 42, Senor G’s, Piknic, Alejo’s, California Pizza Kitchen, The Inn at Playa del Rey, Marina del Rey Garden Center, Four Daughters Restaurant, Massage for Your Health, Centinela Feed – Westchester, Trader Joe’s, and Dr. David Schwarting, who has donated the first item in the silent auction, a $299 tooth whitening service, Stacey said.
The toy drive is sponsored by Jane St. John of RE/MAX Beach Cities Realtors, with support from Starbucks in Marina del Rey and Bristol Farms-Westchester.
Local resident Donna Manders, who is organizing the animal shelter portion of the event, asks community members to bring supplies for animals, such as new or gently used clean pet beds, towels, washable toys, unopened bags of food, canned food, unopened treats for cats and dogs (no rawhide), unopened cat litter, new leashes, collars and small dog sweaters, grooming items and travel crates.
All donations will be delivered to the Los Angeles city and county animal shelters and distributed to individual shelters based on need.
Manders said the animal shelter drive is sponsored by Flowers by Felicia, with additional support by Beach Pizza.
The event will be held rain or shine, but in case of rain, the public is encouraged to bring donations to the garage in the alley behind 7528 Whitlock Ave. at the intersection of Whitlock and Waterview Street in Playa del Rey.
