The Santa Monica Playhouse, a nonprofit community theater space in downtown Santa Monica, has been awarded a City of Santa Monica Community Arts Grant to expand the playhouse outreach program into local schools.
Specifically, the grant will fund a series of theater field trips in which students from the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District will participate in interactive professional musical productions, post-show talk-backs and language arts workshops, according to Santa Monica Playhouse director of education Cammy Truong.
Students will also be familiarized with behind-the-scenes lighting, costuming and stage makeup.
Playhouse officials say they hope that the program will stir students’ imaginations, offer practical study skills and even help students meet state standards in English, theater and reading.
As part of the theater field trip program, professional actors present original musical adaptations of familiar classics. The actors interact with the students, encouraging them to come up with imaginative theatrical solutions to social and moral issues of the day.
Interested Santa Monica schools can contact the playhouse for scheduling information at (310) 394-9779.
Santa Monica Playhouse is one of ten city arts organizations recognized as qualified to teach arts in the Santa Monica school district through the SMARTS in the school art program.
