The Dec. 13 attack with a folding chair was captured on video by a witness

Los Angeles police have arrested the man accused of brutally beating a homeless man with a metal folding chair last month on the Venice boardwalk.
Apolinar Celestino Lopez, 30, was arrested during a Jan. 5 traffic stop in Venice, according to police. Lopez was allegedly driving under the influence before the stop, and a check of his driving record revealed a warrant for his arrest.
A witness to the Dec. 13 attack near the 1300 block of Ocean Front Walk used a cell phone to record footage of the beating. The video shows the victim being struck with the chair several times on his face and upper body.
Detectives from LAPD Pacific Division’s gang enforcement detail had obtained a warrant for Lopez’s arrest after reviewing the video.
Police have not released a motive for the assault, but “it appears the two men knew each other,” Pacific Division Capt. Brian Johnson told the Argonaut.
Anyone with additional information about the attack is asked to contact detectives at (310) 482-6313 or can remain anonymous by reporting through the Crime Stoppers tip line at (800) 222-8477.
