The Santa Monica Police Department is offering free self-defense classes to any adults who live, work or attend school in Santa Monica.

The Santa Monica Police Department Defensive Tactics Team will teach an abbreviated version of the Krav Maga system of self defense, which is taught to all officers and non-sworn personnel.

Krav Maga, the official self defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces, is considered easy to learn regardless of the age, gender or physical fitness of the student, police say.

It is a system of self-defense which teaches people to use their “personal body weapons” and intuitive reactions rather than relying on strength.

The four-hour class will be offered from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., or 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 23rd, and Sunday, June 24th.

Registration is open until the classes are full.
