A Venice man was wounded in an apparent gang-related shooting at the Oakwood Recreation Center Nov. 10, police said.

The man, who is believed to be about 46 years old, was walking near one end of the park at Broadway Street and Seventh Avenue at about 8 p.m. when he was approached by two suspects, who allegedly shot him, police said.

The victim was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

The suspects, who fled the scene, were not apprehended.

A longtime Oakwood neighborhood resident, who was sitting with a group of people at the park picnic tables, said the victim had come over to talk with them right before the shooting took place. The victim’s behavior did not seem to be out of the ordinary, said the resident, who knows the man from the neighborhood.

When the victim was walking out of the park, he was approached by two Hispanic male suspects wearing black “hoodies” who yelled out and allegedly fired shots, striking the victim, the witness said. The victim is not affiliated with any gang, the witness said.

“That was shocking because nothing had been happening for a while,” said the witness, referring to crime activity in the neighborhood.

Following the shooting, the two suspects ran away northbound on Seventh Avenue, the witness said.
