The MoveOn Council West LA will hold a free public gathering called The Folly of Our Times Festival from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 24 at Ocean View Park, 2701 Barnard Way in Santa Monica.
The festival will take a comedic and satirical look at the mortgage crisis, its causes and its consequences, through music and the world premiere of an original play.
Linda Holter, co-organizer of the West LA MoveOn Council, has written an original three-act play called The Folly of Our Times addressing the issue, which will have its world premiere at the festival, produced by Madison Brightwell.
Featured in the cast are Shari Barrett, Brightwell, Colleen Bugarske, Ron Edwards, Drew Fitzsimmons, Barry Ford, Marlene Grinde, Michel Grinde, Luka Hays, Linda Holter, Christopher Loring, Valerie Ruel and Elizabeth Scher.
As part of the festival Melissa Vardey will be performing songs from her original one-woman show A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Foreclosure, a humorous take on her journey from desperation to salvation via escrow, event organizers say. Vardey is an acclaimed composer, arranger and producer who has worked alongside such stellar artists as Barbra Streisand, Madonna, Barry Manilow, Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson and Rod Stewart.
Also performing will be the satirical group The Billionaires, who perform in top hats and tuxedos using humor, satire, and song.
The MoveOn WLA Council is a part of MoveOn.org, a grass-roots political action and public policy advocacy organization founded in 1998.
