The Santa Monica College Photography Gallery will present Reflections Within: The Soul Speaks, an exhibit of dramatic portraits by photographer Marissa L—pez-Donatt, beginning Monday, April 16 through May 4.

An opening reception is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 21 in the gallery, located on the second floor of Drescher Hall on the main SMC campus, 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica.

Lopez-Donatt has taught photography at SMC for the Hispanic community since 1994 and is the daughter of Ernesto Lopez, the Hanna-Barbera director of animation and creator of Pancho Pantera from Chocomil and many other Mexican animated characters.

Much of her photography revolves around portraits, but she also creates commercial, fashion editorial, dance and landscape photography.

L—pez-Donatt says the SMC exhibit explores human beauty within the soul and includes a mix of recent work and some past images.

“Creating not only pictures but pieces of art with imagination, telling a story vividly and passionately, that is what I love,” L—pez-Donatt said. “I love to express the beauty of a bride, a businessman, a model, a dancer, an actor and even a mother-to-be or her beautiful baby during birth.”

An SMC alumna, L—pez-Donatt is also an adjunct photography professor at the college and has been teaching photography in Spanish and English at Wedding Portrait Professionals International, Samys Camera and around the world.

She has won several Accolade Awards from the wedding portrait group and is currently working on a book of her work.

SMC Photography Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
