A community workshop on operational and program plans for the new Annenberg Community Beach Club at Santa Monica State Beach is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, November 3rd, at the Santa Monica Public Library multipurpose room, 601 Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica.
Developed in the 1920s by newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst for actress Marion Davies, the 5.5-acre ocean front property at 415 Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) originally included a 100-room mansion, an ornate swimming pool, tennis courts and a guesthouse.
After the property served as a private hotel and then a private beach club, the City of Santa Monica operated the site as a seasonal public beach facility. Following the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, the city began an extensive community planning process to develop a reuse plan that would take advantage of the site’s beachfront location, its history and its potential as a unique public destination, city officials said.
In early 2005, the city received a grant from the Annenberg Foundation, on the recommendation of Wallis Annenberg, for the reuse and rehabilitation of the site as a public beach facility. The project design was developed with extensive community input and the project is now under construction.
City staff will present site details and operating parameters at the November 3rd community workshop. Following a 10 a.m. presentation, attendees will be given the opportunity to envision their “perfect day” at the Annenberg Community Beach Club, city officials said.
Public input will be incorporated into the operational and program plan for the site and additional opportunities for input will be scheduled prior to the opening.
The revitalized site will include space for meetings and events, a restored historic pool, a new pool house with locker rooms, picnic areas and gardens, an improved beach cafÈ, a concessions stand, volleyball nets and beach tennis courts. The site is expected to open to the public in early 2009.
