Registration is under way for the annual Spring Singles Paddle Tennis Tournament, scheduled at the Venice Beach Recreation Center, 1800 Ocean Front Walk, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 1st and 2nd.
There will be competitions for both men and women.
Players may select from among five divisions — Men’s Open, A and B, and Women’s Open and B — and a double elimination tournament will be conducted under U.S. Paddle Tennis Association rules.
Each division may be limited to 16 participants, with a minimum of six competitors needed for a division to be contested.
Players use solid paddles, made of wood or graphite, and a regulation tennis ball that is punctured to reduce the air pressure, as well as the amount of bounce.
The court is similar to a traditional tennis court, but smaller, and the style of play and scoring is much like, but not identical to, the game that is played at the U.S. Open and Wimbledon.
Trophies will be presented to the top two finishers in each division, and all participants will receive a tournament T-shirt and refreshments.
Early registration is $25 per player through Saturday, March 18th, and $35 from Sunday, March 19th, through Wednesday, March 29th.
The Venice Beach Recreation Center is operated by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, and is at 1800 Ocean Front Walk, Venice.
