Registration is under way for the annual Cinco de Mayo Doubles Paddle Tennis Tournament the first weekend in May at the Venice Beach Recreation Center, 1800 Ocean Front Walk, Venice.

The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 5th, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (as needed) Sunday, May 6th.

The double-elimination tournament, which includes five divisions — menís open, A and B; and womenís open and A — will be conducted under United States Paddle Tennis Association rules.

Each division may be limited to 16 teams, with a minimum of six needed for a division to be contested.

Players use solid paddles made of wood or graphite and a regulation tennis ball that is punctured to reduce the air pressure and the amount of bounce.

The court is smaller than, but similar in proportion to, a traditional tennis court and the style of play and scoring is much like, but not identical to, the tennis game that is played at the U.S. Open and Wimbledon.

Trophies will be presented to the top two pairs in each division and participants will receive a tournament T-shirt and refreshments while supplies last.

Registration is $70 per team through Friday, May 4th.
