The Santa Monica High School Vikings opened the new season with authority by defeating host Hueneme High School of Oxnard 49-21 in a non-league game Friday, September 8th.
The Vikings (1-0) scored two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters, taking a 28-7 lead into halftime on their way to a commanding victory.
Santa Monica junior quarterback Ryan Katz passed for 142 yards and the Vikings rushed for a total of 375 yards against Hueneme (0-1).
The Vikings will next host Palisades High School in a non-league game at 7 p.m. Friday, September 15th.
The Venice High School Gondoliers were defeated 30-25 by fellow Los Angeles City Section opponent Carson High School in the season-opening game Friday, September 8th.
The Gondoliers (0-1) faced a familiar first-game opponent in host Carson (1-0), but this time it was the Colts who took away the glory.
Venice won last year’s meeting 35-14.
After trailing 14-12 at halftime, the Gondos were in position to take the lead late in the fourth quarter, but Carson defensive back Jeff Mueller intercepted Venice junior quarterback Richard Ragland.
Venice tied the game at 6-6 in the first quarter when Ragland, who finished 11-of-19 for 236 yards passing, connected with junior wide receiver Queshawn Gregory for a ten-yard touchdown pass.
Junior running back Curtis McNeal scored a touchdown for Venice in each of the next three quarters, including runs of four yards and one yard, and a 68-yard reception from Ragland.
McNeal finished with ten carries for 70 yards rushing.
The Gondoliers will next host Loyola High School in a non-league game at 7 p.m. Friday, September 15th.
The Westchester High School Comets held off a late challenge by visiting Franklin High School to earn a 12-7 victory in the season opener Friday, September 8th.
The Comets (1-0) picked up their first score in the first quarter when senior running back Darren Starks, who rushed for 132 yards on 16 carries, ran 23 yards for a touchdown.
Junior Terry Jones then added a three-yard touchdown reception from senior quarterback Isiah Barton to give the Comets a 12-0 lead at halftime.
Barton finished nine-of-24 for 79 yards passing.
Franklin (0-1) managed to score a touchdown in the fourth quarter after being held scoreless for the first three quarters.
Westchester will next face host San Pedro High School in a non-league game at 7 p.m. Friday, September 15th.
In St. Monica High School’s first game under new coach Chris Caminiti, the Mariners were shut out 35-0 by host Bishop Montgomery High School in the season opener Friday, September 8th.
The two teams were scoreless in the first quarter, but Bishop Montgomery (1-0) jumped ahead with two touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 13-0 lead at halftime.
The Mariners (0-1) continued to struggle on offense in the second half, as Bishop Montgomery surged to a commanding victory with one touchdown in the third quarter and two more in the fourth quarter.
St. Monica will next play against host El Segundo High School in a non-league game at 7 p.m. Friday, September 15th.
