The Music Center of Los Angeles County has announced the 30 high school student artists who have been named semifinalists in photography and two-dimensional art in the 2007 Music Center Spotlight Awards visual arts competition.
All semifinalists will have their work shown at the Bobbie Greenfield Gallery at Bergamot Station, 2525 Michigan Ave., Santa Monica, where the winners will be announced at a special reception Sunday, March 11th.
Local semifinalists include Darya Farhoodi, a senior and mixed media artist, and Ran Zhang, a junior and painter, both students at Santa Monica High School.
More than 760 high school students submitted original artwork for this year’s competition.
The submissions were reviewed by leading artists and arts professionals who considered the technical expertise involved in each work, including its craft, visual quality, how effectively the works expand artistic boundaries, artistic sensitivity and vision.
To select the winners, a panel of artists and arts professionals will meet with each semifinalist to review and discuss his or her work. Winners are selected in both photography and two-dimensional art.
First-place winners in each category receive $6,000. Second-place winners receive $3,000 and five honorable mention winners receive $250. Each semifinalist receives $100. A dinner will be held Saturday, April 14th.
