The inaugural Saint John’s Santa Monica 5000 race benefiting Saint John’s Health Center is scheduled Sunday, October 22nd.

The 5K and 10K race starts and finishes near the Santa Monica Pier and features ocean views and a post-event party on the pier.

Race funds will help Saint John’s Health Center build its replacement hospital, which will include a new emergency department, event organizers say.

The Saint John’s 24-hour emergency department has about 30,000 patient visits each year.

“Saint John’s has served the people of Santa Monica and neighboring communities for over 60 years,” said Robert O. Klein, Saint John’s vice president of foundation and health care center relations. “We are pleased to be the beneficiary of such a wonderful health and fitness event right here in our own community.”

The Santa Monica 5000 race will also feature a “Media Mile,” in which several prominent Los Angeles reporters and photographers will have an opportunity to compete against each other in a friendly one-mile competition.

Pat Connelly, who has coached more than 27,000 runners over the past 16 years and will be competing in his 50th marathon at the Marine Corps Marathon this month, will help inspire runners throughout the race week, event organizers said.

Actor Isaiah Washington, who plays Dr. Preston Burke on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, will start the race.

Television reporter Cecilia Bogran, actress Lisa Arturo from American Pie 2, Alex Bell and Kim Powers from Survivor, and 2005 Miss Massachusetts Cristina Nardozzi are also scheduled to attend the event.

“We’re thrilled that Isaiah and so many wonderful celebrities have decided to join us in our inaugural year to help support Saint John’s Health Center,” event director Brennan Lindner said.

The post-event party will feature several live bands, including Los Angeles-based Kelly’s Lot, New Maximum Donkey, Seeking Zenith and For Pete’s Sake.

Other features of the event include a pancake breakfast served by Powers, gait analysis performed by Connelly, and various activities for children, including balloon animals, face painting and a magician who works with live animals.
