The sixth annual Santa Monica 5000, a 5K/10K run/walk event benefiting the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation, will be held Sunday, Oct. 2.
The event also features a 2.7K Dash for Kids and Stroller Stride for parents pushing newborns and toddlers in strollers. Races are scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. with staggered start times.
All events will take place on a scenic course that starts next to the beach at Ocean Park Boulevard and ends at the world famous Santa Monica Pier, where a free celebration featuring live music, fitness demonstrations and a sampling of sponsor products will be held. Activities for children include balloon animals, face painting, and a magician.
A portion of entry fees and sponsorship revenues for the event will go toward the education foundation’s effort to raise money for local school fitness and athletic programs facing funding shortfalls. The race will also provide funding for the foundation’s newly established athletic endowment.
“We are very grateful to the organizers of the Santa Monica 5000 for addressing the need to support school athletics,” said Linda Greenberg, the foundation’s executive director. “By teaming up with the Santa Monica 5000, we encourage fitness and raise money at the same time. This is a total win-win.”
