Santa Monica Sporting FC, an adult men’s soccer club from Santa Monica, was crowned champion of the MLS Copa Bud Light Southern California regional 6 vs. 6 soccer tournament at the Bell Gardens Sports Complex last month.

Santa Monica Sporting FC entered three teams in the competition, which attracted 64 teams from across Southern California. All three teams went undefeated in regular round matches and in the competition rounds.

One team won the tournament after defeating another of the club’s teams in the semi-finals. The third Santa Monica club team tied its quarter final match but lost on penalty kicks.

The first- and third-placed Sporting FC teams will now advance to the U.S. National Championships Sunday, April 15 at the Home Depot Center in Carson.

“The club has progressed substantially over the past year, winning the Premier Division of the South Bay Peninsula Soccer League in 2011 with an undefeated record and now winning this prestigious 6 vs. 6 tournament in 2012. It means a lot to the players, coaches and management at the club who have all worked really hard to get to where we are today,” said Rolando Marchis, club chairman.
