The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Monica John Adams Middle School Branch has received two national awards in recognition of members’ leadership and service in the community.
The pre-teen club members have been honored for their efforts in health and fitness and education with first and third place for the Torch Club Award from Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Staples Foundation, a private foundation created by Staples, Inc.
Representatives from Staples presented two oversized checks for $2,500 and $1,000 to members of the unit’s Torch Club May 17 to honor them for the positive impact they’ve had on the local community. Torch clubs are small groups within Boys & Girls Clubs that encourage positive self-esteem and personal growth and reinforce academic achievement.
The middle school-age youth completed a variety of service projects throughout the school year, including holding annual elections for Torch Club officers on National Election Day, performing clean-ups of local businesses, participating in Heal the Bay beach clean-ups, and hosting club-wide debates on local issues.
The club was selected out of more than 1,600 Torch Clubs to receive the first place award in the health and fitness category and third place in the education category.
