The Corsair, the student newspaper for Santa Monica College (SMC), won 14 awards at the 2010 state convention of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges in Los Angeles.

The Corsair, which picked up two first-place awards, was one of only 13 community college newspapers statewide to receive the prestigious General Excellence award.

Students participated at the convention in several on-the-spot writing and photography contests and also attended workshops offered throughout the three-day event, including seminars on multimedia storytelling, rock and roll reporting and newspaper design. The results of mail-in contests recognizing top work from last semester were also announced at the convention.

Highlights of the awards event were a first-place finish in broadcast news writing for Ingrid Rosales, the current Corsair calendar editor, and a first-place award in the feature photograph category for Carlos Gutierrez, a Corsair staff photographer from the fall semester.

Rebecca Slawter, the Corsair news editor, earned second place in the news writing contest, while Corsair staff photographer Alfredo Luna grabbed second place in the news photo contest.
