The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) will hold the first of two rounds of community open house events this month to help educate the communities about the Strategic Plan update process.

“Tell Us What You Think” is the theme of the first round of three open house meetings designed primarily to share information about the process and the content of the district’s Strategic Plan, the document the district uses to clarify its long-term vision, identify key priorities, and guide decision-making.

In this first round, two events are scheduled in Santa Monica. They are planned for 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 12th at John Muir Elementary School cafetorium, 2526 Sixth St.; and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 13th, at Lincoln Middle School auditorium, 1501 California Ave.

“The whole idea is to give the communities that the district serves an opportunity to tell us what they think are the most important issues we in the district should be addressing, to clarify those assets and strengths that should be preserved and protected, and to better understand the opportunities for improving the district and our schools,” said district Superintendent Tim Cuneo.

The open house events are designed to be a “drop by when you can” format, where attendees can stop by the venues anytime between 6 and 9 p.m. Attendees can also leave written comments regarding the information at each of the stations. All of the comments will be recorded and summarized in an open house summary report.

District staff, along with members of the Strategic Plan team (a collection of district staff, school administrators, teachers, and committee members) will be on hand to answer questions and guide participants through the process.

Food and refreshments will also be provided. All the information at the events will be in both English and Spanish.

A second round of three open house events is scheduled for early June to introduce the emerging draft district Strategic Plan to the communities before the school board approves it.
