A 23-year-old Santa Monica man was killed in a collision after apparently racing another vehicle early Feb. 12, police said.

Santa Monica police were called at about 3 a.m. to the 2000 block of Wilshire Boulevard, where a vehicle had crashed into a tree on the north side of the street, Sgt. Jay Trisler said.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the vehicle was apparently racing another vehicle westbound on Wilshire when he lost control of his vehicle and struck the other car before hitting the tree, Trisler said.

The driver, identified by the county coroner as Anupam Sanyal, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, Trisler said.

Later that morning officers located the other vehicle believed to be involved in the incident which was unoccupied, he said. Police were able to track down the other driver and conducted an interview regarding the accident, but no arrests have been made, Trisler said.

The investigation is still ongoing.
