A 25-year-old Santa Monica man who was convicted of killing his girlfriend and stuffing her body in the trunk of a car last year has been sentenced to 56 years to life in prison.
Van Nuys Superior Court Judge Martin Herscovitz, who presided over the trial last month, sentenced Adel Tabrizi Chapel Dec. 2, Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Jane Creighton said. A jury had deliberated three hours before convicting the defendant of the first-degree murder of Denise Figueroa, 22, of North Hills.
According to evidence presented at trial, Chapel killed the victim with a hammer and put her body in the trunk of a black Nissan Altima, a district attorney spokeswoman said. After receiving an anonymous tip faxed to KTLA-TV, police found the car with the victim’s body in March 2009 on a street in Valley Village.
