A 39-year-old Santa Monica man was shot to death in the Oakwood area of Venice early Thursday, April 27th, police said.

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Pacific Community police were called to the area of Sixth and Brooks Avenues in Venice at 5:30 a.m., where they located a man with multiple gunshot wounds on the sidewalk.

The man, identified as Juan Alvarez, was pronounced dead at the scene, a Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office spokesman said.

Alvarez was on the sidewalk when an unknown suspect allegedly approached him and fired several shots, possibly from close range, police said.

The suspect, who is described as a man wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, is still at large, police said.

Police alleged that the shooting “appeared to be gang- or narcotic-related.”
