Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica will present Meditations: Eva Hesse, a new play and interdisciplinary performance work inspired by the life and times of the influential mid-20th century artist.

Performances are scheduled at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24 and 3 and 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25 at Highways, 1651 18th St., Santa Monica.

The play, written by Marcie Begleiter and directed by David

Watkins, Jr., is the first theatrical piece based on this ground-breaking American artist, said Highways Artistic Director Leo Garcia. Mediations: Eva Hesse follows the last day of the artist’s life with a dying Hesse laboring to complete her final exhibit.

Moving in and out of memory, Hesse’s life plays back in a series of episodes reflecting earlier incarnations. In the end, an unlikely angel of death appears to help her make peace.

Hesse died of a brain tumor at age 34, just as her work was being widely recognized.

Tickets are $20 general admission and $15 for members, students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased online at www.highwaysperformance.org/.
