Art works by photographer Anthony Friedkin and painter Stephanie Ramer, both surfers, will be featured in the exhibit Making Waves at drkrm/gallery/west in Santa Monica beginning Thursday, May 20th and continuing through June 27th.
An opening reception is scheduled from 7 to 10 p.m. May 20th at the gallery, 729 Montana Ave. Suite 2, Santa Monica.
Both artists say they have a deep appreciation for the ocean and an understanding of the uniqueness of each wave. They use different mediums to address the same subject matter, ocean waves.
“Waves are like liquid sculpture,” says Freidkin of his black and white photographs. “They move with dynamic force and ethereal beauty and symbolize our universe by displaying mystical forms of energy.”
Ramer uses oil pastels “to capture on an intimate scale the critical moment of transition where the wave is breaking,” says an exhibit spokesperson. She focuses her attention on the pocket of the wave, which she describes as being “both empty of the chaos and right smack in the middle of it.”
Gallery hours are from noon to 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and by appointment. All events are free and open to the public.
