Plays in the Park, a themed show of readings of short plays with actors Edward Asner, Mark Rydell and Esai Morales, will be presented at the Santa Monica Playhouse beginning Sunday, July 8 through Aug. 12.
Performances are scheduled at 3 and 7 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at the playhouse main stage, 1211 Fourth St., Santa Monica. Previews will be held at 3 and 7 p.m. Saturday, July 7 and 3 p.m. July 8.
Asner (“Lou Grant,” “Mary Tyler Moore,” “Roots,” “Rich Man, Poor Man”) is the recipient of seven Emmy Awards and five Golden Globes. Plays in the Park marks Asner’s last local stage appearance before he heads to Broadway to star in the new play Grace with Paul Rudd and Michael Shannon.
Rydell is a former daytime drama star (“The Edge of Night,” “As The World Turns”) who went on to direct classic television (“Gunsmoke,” “Ben Casey”) and blockbuster movies (“The River,” “The Rose,” “The Cowboys”). He received an Oscar nomination for “On Golden Pond”.
Morales (“La Bamba,” “Fairly Legal” and “NYPD Blue”) also joins the cast.
The cast also includes Susan Ateh, Beege Barkette, Chihiro Kawamura and Dahlia Waingort.
Plays in the Park is a themed program of short plays unified by their locale. The show will consist of readings of “Park Strangers” and “Swans,” and “Oxymorons.”
The show is written and directed by Brian Connors.
