A team from the Santa Monica Police Department finished in third place out of 24 teams entered in the under-300 division of the 2006 Baker to Las Vegas 120-mile relay race Saturday, April 1st.

The Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay is considered one of the largest law enforcement races in the world.

The 20-stage relay race starts in Baker and travels through the California desert and over the mountains to Las Vegas, Nevada.

Officers from the Santa Monica Police Department team ran this year’s race in memory of Officer Rick Crocker, a major in the U.S. Marines who was killed last year in a rocket-propelled grenade attack during his second tour of duty in Iraq.

The team finished the 120-mile relay race in its best time of 15 hours, 40 minutes and 59 seconds.

The three team captains were Detective HeeSeok Ahn, Motor Officer Shaun Nichols and K-9 Officer Roberto Villegas.
