Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District students are getting out their bikes, scooters, skateboards and walking shoes for Bike It! Walk It! days at schools this month.
Bike It! Walk It! events encourage both students and staff to leave their cars at home and utilize other modes of transportation, including carpooling and riding the bus.
Several schools kicked off the latest effort earlier this month. Santa Monica schools participating on Friday, May 11 include Will Rogers Learning Community, Edison Language Academy, Grant Elementary, Franklin Elementary and John Adams Middle School.
Parking and drop-off space continue to be in short supply, event organizers say. The Facility Improvements Projects office provides support for Bike It! Walk It! and Safe Routes to School in an effort to reduce traffic congestion near schools and promote health, safety, environmental, and community benefits.
The Santa Monica High School Solar Alliance initiated Bike It! Day at Samohi four years ago in an effort to reduce the school’s carbon footprint. Since then, Bike It! Walk It! has grown into a district-wide event.
