The Santa Monica Public Library’s 2007 Green Prize for Sustainable Literature winners will be announced at an awards ceremony scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 29th, in the Main Library North Courtyard, 601 Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica.

The winning authors, illustrators and publishers are invited to attend, as well as members of the sustainability community, local press and city staff.

The Green Prize has been created to encourage and commend authors, illustrators and publishers who produce books that make contributions to, support the ideas of, and broaden public awareness of sustainability.

Sustainability is defined by the city’s sustainable city plan as “meeting current needs — environmental, economic and social — without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same.”

Prizes will be awarded in the categories of youth fiction, youth nonfiction, youth picture book, adult nonfiction and adult reference.

In addition, honorary awards will be given for a youth and an adult title with local relevance, and a Green Prize Pioneer Award will be presented to honor a writer who has paved the way for discourse on sustainable issues.
