A Marina del Rey woman has been reported missing after she went snorkeling off a Rancho Palos Verdes resort Aug. 11 and did not return home, authorities said.

The U.S. Coast Guard, county Sheriff’s Department and other local emergency responders have conducted search efforts for 50-year-old Rebecca Weiss in the area of the Terranea Resort, where she had reportedly gone free diving alone in the morning, authorities said.

When Weiss did not return home in the afternoon, her husband said he went to the area where they frequently free dive and found her car and some personal items on the beach but did not locate her, said Lt. Michael Rodriguez of the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. She was reported missing around 11 p.m.

Sheriff’s Department Emergency Services Detail and Los Angeles County Fire Department/Lifeguard Dive Division personnel were dispatched to the area to assist in the search for Weiss.

The effort additionally involved a Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Los Angeles and a 45-foot response boat from Station Los Angeles-Long Beach, which both conducted searches throughout the night. The Coast Guard Cutter Narwhal, based out of Corona del Mar was also sent in the search pattern and a Baywatch Cabrillo boat crew and Sheriff’s helicopter also conducted searches into the night.

An extensive search of the area by emergency responders the following morning, Aug. 12, did not locate Weiss. Four divers with Baywatch Marina del Rey were launched that morning to begin sub-surface searches, a Coast Guard spokesperson said.
