A memorial service and reception for Howard Peter Epstein will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, November 10th, at the California Yacht Club, 4469 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey.

He died Saturday, September 3rd, at a house he designed and built in Goodview, Virginia. He was 55.

He was raised in Santa Monica and was a longstanding member of the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey.

His friends said guests should wear Aloha shirts to the reception because Epstein would have loved and wanted this dress code.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Epstein’s name to the California Yacht Club Junior Program.

Epstein was an avid sailboat racer on boats such as the Lizzie B, the Stardancer, and the Pendragon.

His sailing travels took him to Mexico, Australia, Papua, New Guinea and Europe, as well as many states in the U.S.

He spent much time in Hangzhou, China.

With his fiancÈe and partner, Carol Patterson, he was the co-owner of several businesses with offices in the U.S. and China.

They owned The Gallery on the Lake, an art gallery at Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia. They also designed and built homes in Virginia through a design concepts company.

Friends say that Epstein’s love and knowledge of boats were blended into designs of everyday living space. He also loved to cook and entertain friends.

He added a garden to his and Patterson’s home in China and imported a barbecue grill so he could make their China surroundings more like their California lifestyle.

Epstein is survived by his fiancÈe, Carol Patterson of Virginia; parents Sol and Esther Epstein of Laguna Woods; brother Mike Epstein and wife Carol of Laguna Woods; brother Mort Green of Oak Park; and sister Kayla Epstein Gruenberg and husband Max of Alaska.
