Seven varsity junior rowers from the California Yacht Club (CYC) in Marina del Rey received medals during two regattas last month at the Long Beach Marine Stadium.

Junior rowing includes competitive middle and high school-aged rowers.

In the women’s varsity Single Scull event, Katie O’Hanlon captured gold at both Long Beach regattas in April, while Anna Rasmussen captured bronze in the event at the second regatta.

In the women’s varsity Double Sculls, Rasmussen and O’Hanlon took gold at the first regatta, but were edged out at the second regatta by Long Beach JC by less than a second in a close finish which earned them silver.

In the men’s varsity Single Scull event, John Kessler captured bronze at the first Long Beach regatta, then teamed with Jake Palmquist in both the men’s varsity and the Lightweight Double Sculls to earn bronze and silver medals respectively.

At both regattas, the California Yacht Club’s women’s varsity quad captured silver. As testament to the team’s depth, performance was equally strong after substituting one athlete for another in the quad: Rasmussen, Leanne McNamee (first regatta) then Brittany Teleng (second regatta), Gaby Zarate de Macedo, and O’Hanlon, team coaches said.

“Most notable about the CYC team’s performance in Long Beach,” said head coach Guillermo Lemus, “was the depth and breadth that the CYC Junior Rowing team demonstrated across the board.”

This was evident not only among CYC varsity junior rowers, but also by the CYC lightweight junior rowers, with standout winning performances by Maureen O’Hanlon and McNamee, who took gold in the women’s Lightweight Double at both regattas, coaches said.
