The Other Venice Film Festival will return to Venice for the seventh year Friday through Sunday, Oct. 15 through 17, with screenings at Beyond Baroque, a tribute to the late actor Dennis Hopper, and a music video competition.

The annual festival is a community-supported event dedicated to screening films, presenting musicians and showcasing art that embody the spirit, energy and diversity of Venice, festival organizers say.

The Other Venice Film Festival was originally founded in 2003 as a platform for independent filmmakers from all over the world to come together and screen their recently completed, groundbreaking productions, festival founder Reuben De La Casas said. It is also seen as an event in which citizens of Venice Beach can experience “insightful, enlightening and engaging works of cinematic art,” and connect with Hollywood filmmakers of the future, he added.

An opening night tribute event is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Bluehouse at Big Red Sun, 560 Rose Ave., Venice. The event will feature screenings of the 1961 film “Night Tide,” starring Hopper and the short film “Venice Beach in the Sixties,” directed by Leland Auslender, as well as a live music performance by flamenco guitarist Michael Jost. A lifetime achievement tribute will be given to Hopper, the director of the film “Easy Rider” and a Venice resident who died earlier this year, by Danny Bresnick. Tickets to the opening night are $20.

The Other Venice Film Festival will also present its prestigious Abbot Spotlight Awards Oct. 17. This honorary award is presented to an accomplished film director who embodies the spirit, energy and diversity of Venice Beach.

Honorees in past festivals have included Venice filmmakers Catherine Hardwicke, Roger Corman, Werner Herzog, Tony Bill, Stacy Peralta and Oliver Stone.

Screenings of youth series, short, feature and documentary films will be held from 10 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. Oct. 16, and noon to 3:45 p.m. Oct. 17 at Beyond Baroque, 681, Venice Blvd. A feature and short film competition will also be held.

A music video competition will be held Oct. 16 at The Air Conditioned Supper Club, 625 Lincoln Blvd., Venice. Live music will be performed by Darkin Hollow and Natural Hi Fi. Doors open at 8 p.m. To purchase tickets, (877) 725-8849, or
