A portion of Dockweiler Beach in Playa del Rey was closed to the public Thursday, August 26th, due to a 200-gallon sewage spill originating from a broken pipe in El Segundo adjacent to the beach.

The beach was closed for 200 yards in either direction from the Imperial Highway storm drain.

Los Angeles County of Health Services officials reopened the beach Friday, August 28th, after ocean water bacterial levels met state standards, county health officials said.

“Two hundred gallons of sewage is not a big spill,” said John Musella, spokesperson for county Supervisor Don Knabe.

The beach was closed as soon as the spill was detected, Musella said.

No humans or marine life are believed to have been harmed due to the spill, Musella said.
