A special collection of artworks created by professors and administrators of Shandong University of Arts in Jinan, China is on exhibit through Friday, July 30 at Santa Monica College’s Pete & Susan Barrett Art Gallery, SMC Performing Arts Center, 1301 11th St., Santa Monica. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, noon to 5 p.m.
The exhibition includes works from University President Zhimin Zhang, whose traditional Chinese ink paintings are world renowned and who was invited in 2009 to participate in an international art show at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
The art show is part of a cultural exchange with SMC. In fall 2008, the college sent a group of theatre arts students to perform “American Reflections: Broadway in Concert” at Shandong as part of the university’s 50th anniversary celebration.
A closing reception will be held in honor of the delegates from Shandong University of Arts, headed by Zhang, from 5 to 7 p.m. July 30. A silent auction will be held during the reception, and paintings in the exhibition will be available for purchase.
Shandong University of Arts was founded in 1958 as an art institute and today is an educational institution that caters not only to traditional artistic disciplines such as visual art, dance, design, music, and theatre, but also includes departments such as Communications, Public Policy, Education, and Adult Education.
Shandong University of Arts is located in Jinan, a modern city south of Beijing known for its high-tech industries and its lake parks. It has been party to an Agreement of Friendly Exchange with SMC since 2006, an SMC spokesperson said.
