After a three-year absence, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Marina del Rey Station has resurrected the “efficient and maneuverable” bicycle patrol team on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The team patrols areas such as parks, beaches, docks, congested streets and shopping areas that are often inaccessible to regular patrol vehicles.
The high visibility of the bike team helps deter crime while the deputies enforce safety laws and respond to calls for police service, officials say.
The team will focus on such violations as theft, public intoxication and boating or driving under the influence.
Curtailed a few years ago due to budget and staffing constraints, the bicycle team has been reinstated for the summer months, in part due to the urging of the Marina del Rey Sheriff’s Support Unit, a nonprofit booster club formed by a group of local residents and business owners to support the local sheriff’s station.
Information, Sheriff’s Sgt. Jeffrey Ivask, (310) 823-7762.
