Registration is under way for the annual Spring Singles Paddle Tennis Tournament at the Venice Beach Recreation Center, a City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks facility at 1800 Ocean Front Walk, Venice.
The event is scheduled Saturday and Sunday, March 31st and April 1st, with competitions for both men and women.
The competition will include five divisions — Men’s Open, A, and B, and Women’s Open and B — and the double-elimination tournament will be conducted under United States Paddle Tennis Association rules.
Each division may be limited to a maximum of 16 participants, with a minimum of six competitors needed for a division to be contested.
Players use solid paddles made of wood or graphite, and a regulation tennis ball that is punctured to reduce the air pressure, as well as the amount of bounce. The court is similar in proportion to a traditional tennis court, but smaller. The style of play and the scoring are similar to the tennis game that is played at the U.S. Open and Wimbledon, though not identical.
Trophies will go to the top two finishers in each division and participants will receive a tournament T-shirt and refreshments, while supplies last.
The event is scheduled from 9 to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 31st, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (if needed) Sunday, April 1st.
Early registration is $25 per player through Saturday, March 17th, and $35 from Monday, March 19th through Wednesday, March 28th.
