Sister Margaret Mary Dolan, Loyola Marymount University’s alumni chaplain and a beloved member of the university community, died Tuesday, October 6th after a long battle with cancer. She was 75.
A Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary for 55 years, Sister Margaret Mary served the LMU community for over 30 years in various capacities, including as campus minister, director of campus ministry, director of Ignatian retreats, moderator of Gryphon Circle—and most recently, alumni chaplain.
Born July 20th, 1934 in The Bronx, New York, she was educated by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM) in both elementary and secondary school. After graduating from Sacred Heart of Mary Marmion Avenue High School, she entered the RSHM Novitiate in Tarrytown, New York.
She came to California in 1954 and received a bachelor of Arts from Marymount College in Los Angeles in 1958, a master’s degree in library science from Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles in 1964, a master of arts in counseling psychology from LMU in 1974 and a master of arts in applied spirituality from the University of San Francisco in 1979.
During the early part of Sister Margaret Mary’s ministry, she was a teacher both at Sacred Heart of Mary High School in Montebello and later a teacher/principal at Marymount School in Santa Barbara.
She is predeceased by her brother, John, and is survived by her brother Peter, her sisters, Kathleen, and Eileen Keenan, her sister-in-law Geraldine Barbella Dolan and her nieces and nephews.

On Friday, October 16th, a closed casket visitation will begin at 3:30 p.m., followed by a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 17th. The burial will be private. All services will be at Sacred Heart Chapel, Loyola Marymount University.
