Santa Monica College Director of Contract Services Charlie Yen has been named a winner of the 2010 Santa Monica Human Relations Council’s “Community Hero” award.
Yen, who has served with the college for 25 years, mostly in the Events Department, was recognized for his work on the annual “Relay for Life” fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and for serving on the board of the Red Cross and Police Activities League. He was also honored for his organization of SMC’s largest community event, the “Celebrate America” Independence Day festival, and for helping community organizations when requested, according to the Human Relations Council.
Yen, a Santa Monica resident and Taiwan native, and the other awardees will be honored at the Human Relations Council meeting Thursday, April 22nd, and they will be publicly recognized at the Santa Monica Festival at Clover Field Park in on May 8th.
The other “Community Hero” award winners are Ann Buck of the Clare Foundation; the entire group of volunteers from Our House; Jeanne Laurie from Westside Food Bank; Joan Colman and Colleen Hughes from the Santa Monica Police Activities League; Kathy Knight of Friends of Sunset Park; and Betty Darling of Meals on Wheels West.
