Santa Monica College (SMC) has recently appointed new coaches to lead its cheer squad and football and women’s softball teams.

Gifford Lindheim was named the new SMC football head coach, Catherine Horzen is the new head coach for the SMC cheer squad, and Michelle Haines was chosen as the new head coach of the women’s softball team, SMC Athletic Director Gregg Simmons said.

Lindheim, who served as the interim head coach during the 2009 football season, was selected to take the reins as head coach after several strong qualified candidates were interviewed, Simmons said. Simmons noted that the 2009 football season was tough for the program, but Lindheim guided the team in a positive and professional manner.

With Lindheim’s plans for academic success and recruiting local talent, Simmons says he confident Lindheim will be successful as the new football head coach.

Horzen has turned the cheer program in to a stellar, energetic squad in the short few months she has been at SMC, the athletic director said.

Haines joins SMC with prior softball experience as a player and coach, with her most recent experience as a softball instructor at San Diego State University. Though SMC has not had a softball team in over three years, Simmons noted he is confident in Haines’ ability, energy and passion to get the job done.
