The Corsair, Santa Monica College’s student newspaper, received 24 awards, including General Excellence, at the 2011 Southern California Convention of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges held recently at the California State University-Fullerton campus.

The annual event brings together journalism students from Southern California community colleges for a two-day convention that features on-the-spot writing and photography contests and professional workshops. The results of mail-in contests recognizing top work from last year were also announced at the convention.

Corsair staff took home awards in both the on-the-spot and mail-in competitions.

Among the winners, the college’s emerging multimedia journalism program earned its second consecutive first place award in the Web/Broadcast News category with an award given to Michael Miller.

Other SMC students who earned first place awards were Nathalyd Meza for a bring-in ad, Krista Bonelli for feature photo and George Mikhail for photo story.
