Legendary American soul singer Bettye LaVette will headline the free Twilight Dance Series concert on the Santa Monica Pier Thursday, Aug. 19.

LaVette is taking over for the evening’s original headliner, Mick Taylor, legendary guitarist and former member of The Rolling Stones, who canceled his performance due to management issues and health reasons, an event spokesperson said.

LaVette has mostly recently made news in her nearly 50-year career with her May release of “Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook,” which brings the British Invasion home to its American R&B roots and features the singer’s raw emotional renderings of compositions by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, the spokesperson said.

The soul singer’s performance will include material spanning her entire career, including the British Rock Songbook. The Tom Nolan Band, performing blues, R&B and soul, will open the show for LaVette at 7 p.m.
