The 14th Annual Pier del Sol event benefiting Special Olympics Southern California was celebrated Oct. 10 at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier with some local elected officials, celebrities and sports figures in attendance.
This year’s event with a “Hawaiian Paradise” theme included cuisine from over 35 of Los Angeles’ top restaurants, hula lessons, Hawaiian dancers, live tropical music, rides and games. California First Lady Maria Shriver, daughter of Special Olympics founder Eunice Shriver and sister of Santa Monica Mayor Bobby Shriver, served as the honorary chair.
The 2010 Pier del Sol honoree was Tony Buzzelli, vice chairman and regional managing partner of Deloitte LLP. With 39 years of service to the Deloitte organization and an unwavering dedication to community service, Buzzelli was recognized by Special Olympics as a community leader. Co-presenting sponsors were Disney, JAKKS Pacific, Wells Fargo and Westfield.
Since 1997, Pier del Sol has raised nearly $5 million, benefiting the lives of more than 13,000 Special Olympic Southern California athletes. SOSC board member Anita Green joined with Maria Shriver to establish Pier del Sol as a family-focused day of fun and entertainment while raising funds for Special Olympics programs.
“Pier del Sol is a day that the whole family can enjoy, while giving back to the community and our Special Olympic athletes,” said Bill Shumard, president and CEO of Special Olympics Southern California.
