As students at St. Anastasia Catholic School in Playa del Rey begin adjusting to a new school year they are also hoping to help out the less fortunate.

Each class at the K-8 school is now collecting new school supplies to donate to Alexandria House, which provides a transitional residence and safe and supportive housing for women and children who are in the process of moving from emergency shelter to permanent housing.

By partnering with Alexandria House, the students of St. Anastasia will be able to make a donation that will benefit children who might not otherwise have all the necessary tools and gear to start off the school year, teachers said. Items collected include notebooks, backpacks, paper, pens and pencils.

“Every year it amazes me how much we are able to collect for needy school children,” school Principal Rosemary Connolly said. “A big part of our Catholic faith is generosity towards those less fortunate.

“We give our students and their families opportunities throughout the school year to lend a hand, and they always step up to help those who are in need.”
