The varsity boys soccer team from St. Anastasia Catholic School in Playa del Rey captured third place in the Catholic Youth Organization Championship tournament earlier this month.

The CYO tournament fielded a total of 37 teams which were divided into five divisions. The St. Anastasia team, comprised of seventh and eighth graders, placed second in their division and third overall in the competition.

Coached by Ruben Morales and Herb Klein, the team picked up victories in all but one game during the regular season.

“We only had 11 players, yet each one of them knew their roles,” Morales said.

The coach said his team had a solid offense up front with Stefan Flintoft, Lorenzo Secci and Shane Gill, who led the team with ten goals during the seven game regular season.

“During the playoffs we were able to see the goalkeeper in Niko Klein, as he blocked four of the five penalty kicks in our overtime game, which allowed us to move on and eventually get third place in the tournament,” Morales said. “The defense was excellent throughout the whole season, and came up big the last game of the year, as we won 1-0 to defeat St. Dorothy.

“I am very proud of each and every one of them, and would do it all over again if given the opportunity. I have a very talented team filled with players who have a lot of heart and determination.”
