The Sixth Annual Steppin’ Out at the Miles dance performance series will continue at the restored historic Miles Memorial Playhouse in Santa Monica Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 4 and 5.
Sponsored by the Santa Monica Cultural Affairs Division, Steppin’ Out at the Miles is a chance for all ages to step, glide, shimmy, swing, and do-si-do, event organizers say.
At 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, the Swing Cats Big Band, a 13-piece ensemble led by trumpeter Dan Methe and the Swing Kittens vocal trio, will perform the sounds of Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and other favorites.
Doors open at 7:30 p.m., with music beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets at the door are $10 for adults and $5 for anyone over 55 or under 18.
The dance series continues at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, when Triple Chicken Foot will play old-time bluegrass and square dance music with a caller.
A Los Angeles-based string band comprised of Ben Guzm·n on fiddle/mandolin, Mike Heinle on banjo, and Kelly Marie Martin on guitar, Triple Chicken Foot plays music rooted in American tradition. Spending time with veteran players around Los Angeles and the country, the band plays a wide repertoire of gospel songs, archaic banjo tunes, and crooked fiddle melodies.
They have recently finished recording their second full-length CD titled Tar Rivers.
Doors open at 2 p.m., with music at 3 p.m. Tickets at the door are $10 for adults and $5 for anyone over 55 or under 18.
The Miles Memorial Playhouse is located in Christine Reed Park at 1130 Lincoln Blvd., Santa Monica. Free parking is available at 808 Wilshire Blvd.
